GAUGE:
22 sts + 26 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Lace Stitch. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Row 2 (RS): *K1, yo, k1, k2tog tbl, p1, k2tog, k1, p1, k2, p1, k2tog, k1, p1, k1; rep from * once more.
Row 3: *P4, (k1, p2) twice, k1, p4; rep from * once more.
Row 4: *(K1, yo) twice, k2tog tbl, p1, k2tog, p1, k2tog tbl, p1, k2tog, (yo, k1) twice; rep from * once more.
Row 5: *P5, (k1, p1) twice, k1, p5; rep from * once more.
Row 6: *K1, yo, k3, yo, sk2p, p1, k3tog, yo, k3, yo, k1; rep from * once more.
Row 7: *P7, k1, p7; rep from * once more.
Row 8: *K1, yo, k5, yo, sk2p, yo, k5, yo, k1; rep from * once more.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Lace Stitch.
NOTES:
1. A yarn over (yo) creates a new loop on your needle and is worked by wrapping the yarn around your right hand needle. Do not use an existing stitch to make a yarn over. The finished yarn over will leave an open space (like an eyelet) in your knitting—that is part of this design.
2. Number of sts will change from 34 sts on Row 1 to 30 sts on Rows 2-7 to 34 sts on Row 8. Be sure to count your sts at the end of each row.
3. When working Row 1 of Lace Stitch, place a st marker between the 17th and 18th st, for ease in counting your sts.
SCARF
Cast on 34 sts. Beginning with Row 1, rep Rows 1-8 of Lace Stitch until piece measures about 30 in. (76 cm) from beginning, end with Row 8. Bind off.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
