Before we proceed to the pattern, I’m going to make a little Basic Knit Tutorial. Please scroll down if you need to be directed to the patten and skip this tutorial (it’s going to be a long one!)
1. LONG TAIL CAST ON — >> Please click here for tutorial.
2. KNIT STITCH
For the knit stitch, insert your right needle into the bottom loop of the stitch on left needle as shown in the picture above.
Wrap the working yarn counterclockwise (always wrap your yarn counterclockwise) onto the right needle as shown in picture above.
Bring the yarn out from the same loop. Drop the stitch on the left needle. Now you have moved your stitch to your right needle and make a knit stitch.
2. PURL STITCH
Bring your working yarn forward as shown in the picture (means, facing you)
Now, insert your right needle inside the loop of the stitch at left needle from above (as shown in the picture)
Wrap your working yarn onto your right needle counterclockwise (as shown in picture)
Bring out the right needle that have been wrapped by the yarn from the same loop. Drop the stitch on left needle and now you have moved your stitch to your right needle and make a purl stitch.
3. YARN OVER (For KNiT STiTCH SiDE) – Increase
To make yarn over (on knit stitch side), bring the working yarn forward as if you want to purl (see picture)
Then, insert your right needle into the loop of the stitch on left needle as how you usually do the knit stitch.
Wrap the working yarn onto right needle counterclockwise as shown in the picture.
Bring out the right needle from the same loop. Now you will have an extra stitch from the yarn forward you did (also known as a yarn over which makes a hole and give one extra stitch (increase))
4.KNIT 2 TOGETHER -K2TOG (Decrease)
In K2tog, you are knitting 2 stitches together. Insert your right needle into the loop of the 2 stitches together as shown in the picture.
Then, wrap your working yarn onto the right needle as shown in the picture.
Then, bring out your right needle from the same loops, drop the stitch on the left needle. Now you have decrease 2 stitches into 1 stitch and moved them to your right needle.

Skill: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate
Abbreviations:
CO – Cast On
K- Knit
P- Purl
K2tog – Knit 2 together
YO – Yarn over
BO – Bind Off
NOTE:
1. Always move your stitch marker along every time you move to the next round.
2. Old shale pattern:
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: [k2tog x 3 times, (yo,k1) x 6 times, k2tog x 3 times] (repeat [ to ] for the whole round)
Row 4: Purl
3. For 90 cast on, you will get a size of a baby 0-3 months old. If you cast on 108 sts, you will get a size of a baby of 6-12 months old. 90 cast on will get you 5 waves and 108 cast on will get you 6 waves. TIPS: if you make 108 cast on, you need to do the decrease for 5 times but the number of stiches will be as same as the 90 cast on decrease.
Instructions:
Using long-tail cast on method, cast on 90 stitches on your 40cm circular needle. Make sure not to twist (see picture for reference). Place a stitch marker on the right needle to mark you start.
Then,
Round 1: Knit until the last stitch.
Round 2: Purl until the last stitch.
Begin Old Shale Pattern:
Round 3: Knit
Round 4: Knit
Round 5: [k2tog x 3 times, then do (yo,k1) x 6 times then again k2tog x 3 times] (repeat from [ to ] for the whole round – 5 times repeat)
Round 6: Purl
Repeat Round 3 to Round 6 for 3 times more. So as total, you will get 18 rows including Round 1 and Round 2.
Round 19: *Knit through back loop, Purl* repeat from ‘ to ‘ till the end of round.
Round 20: ‘Knit through back loop, Purl’ repeat from ‘ to’ till the end of round.
Repeat Round 19 and Round 20 for 5 times more. As total, you will have 30 rows from the cast on.
Round 31: Knit
Round 32: Knit
Round 33: [k2tog x 3 times, then do (Make1,k1) x 6 times then again k2tog x 3 times] (repeat from [ to ] for the whole round – 5 times repeat)
Round 34:Â Purl
Now, from Round 34 until your desired length, keep knitting. Means, you will just knit the rounds before decrease. So here it will be stockinette stitch pattern. I made my body length as 15cm long from cast on.
now, DECREASE time! (DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR NEEDLE INTO 80 CM LENGTH (divide your stitches to 54 sts and 36 sts per needle – this is to make it easy to do decrease) or if you feel uncomfortable you can use DPNS)
You can use stitch markers to mark your decrease. Since we are having 90 cast on, so the decrease will be 90/5, you will get an even number which is 18 sts. So, place a marker between every 18 sts to make it easier for you.
Next round: *Knit 15 sts, k3tog (knit 3 stitch together)*. Repeat from * to * until the last stitch.
Next round: Knit the whole round
Next round: *Knit 13 sts, k3tog (knit 3 stitch together)*. Repeat from * to * until the last stitch.
Next round: Knit the whole round
Repeat in the same manner by decreasing 3 stitches before marker at the decrease round and knit in the next round until you only have 12 sts left on your needle.Â
Then, cut your working yarn at least 10-15 cm length. Use your blunt yarn needle to insert the working yarn through the 12 stitches left on the needles. Remove the needles. Pull your working yarn as tight as you can, tie and weave it off from inside your baby beanie! 🙂
Fuhhh done!!
Alhamdulillah.. I am glad that this one finish (thanks Mr. hubby for giving me the chance to write this down) oh yes, it took me about 3 hours!!
If you do one, please share with me the picture. I will also upload this pattern to my ravelry. Hope to see you make one soon! 🙂
