Periwinkle Socks Panda Cotton

2 – 50 gr. balls Crystal Palace Yarns Panda Cotton (here periwinkle #9628) (bamboo-cotton-elastic, 50 gr/170 yds)
Needles: CPY Bamboo Circular – US 1 (2.25mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
2 small stitch markers
Woman’s medium, fits approx US size 8 shoe
Gauge: 8.5 sts/inch on size 1 circular needles
Skill level: intermediate
k = knit
p = purl
sl = slip
pm = place marker
yo = yarn over
k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
p2tog = purl 2 stitches together
CDD = center double decrease (slip two stitches together knitwise, k1 and pass the slipped stitches over)
Loosely cast on 68 stitches. Divide evenly between 2 needles. Join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Work in k1, p1 rib for 12 rounds.
Knit one row.
Row 1: *k2, p2, k3, yo, CDD, yo, k3, p2, k4, p2, k3, yo, CDD, yo, k3, p2, k2, repeat from * for 2nd needle.
Row 2: knit all stitches
Row 3: repeat row 1
Row 4: knit all stitches
Row 5:*k2, p2, k2, yo, k1, CDD, k1, yo, k2, p2, k4, p2, k2, yo, k1, CDD, k1, yo, k2, p2, k2, repeat from * for 2nd needle.
Row 6: knit all stitches
Repeat these 6 rows 8 times more. Knit rows 1-4 once more.
Note: Heel stitches will be worked back and forth on first needle only.
Row 1: *sl 1, k1, repeat from * across first needle, turn
Row 2: sl 1, purl to end of row
Repeat these 2 rows until you have 16 slipped stitches along the edge of the heel flap, ending after a knit row.
Row 1 – p19, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 2 – sl1, k5, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 3 – sl1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 4 – sl1, k7, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 5 – sl1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 6 – sl1, k9, k2tog, k1, turn
Continue in this manner all side stitches have been worked as above.
Pick up and knit 17 sts along side of heel flap, pm, k2, p2, k13.
On second needle k13, p2, k2, pm, pick up and knit 17 stitches on other side of heel flap. Knit half of the remaining heel stitches so that the beginning of the round is now at the center of the heel. Adjust stitches so that you have an equal number on each needle.
Knit one round.
Gusset decrease rounds:
Row 1 – knit to within 3 stitches of marker, k2tog, k1, sl marker k2, p2, knit 13, knit first 13 sts on other needle, p2, k2, sl marker, k1, ssk, knit to end of round
Row 2 – knit
Repeat these two rounds until you have 68 sts remaining.
Continue working even, while maintaining established pattern for top of foot, until sock measures 2 inches less than desired length, ending after row 2.
Knit to first marker and adjust your stitches on the needles so that this is now the beginning of the round, and you have 34 stitches on each needle.
Row 1 – k1, ssk, knit to within 3 stitches of end of needle, k2tog, k1, repeat for 2nd needle
Row 2 – knit
Repeat these 2 rounds until you have 12 stitches left on each needle. Cut yarn leaving a 12 inch tail. Graft toe using the Kitchener stitch. Weave in ends.
